This letters with straight lines worksheet is designed to help children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 practise their letter formation. It focuses specifically on letters that are formed using straight lines.
Letters with straight lines
The letters included are ‘v’, ‘w’, ‘x’, ‘k’, and ‘z’. These can sometimes be tricky for young learners due to their angular shapes and different stroke directions.
To support children’s handwriting development, the worksheet provides a dotted outline of each letter. This allows learners to trace over the lines to get a feel for the correct shape and movement.
This helps to build their confidence with these letters, as they can clearly see how to form them. Once they have practised tracing, there is additional space beneath each dotted letter for the children to try writing the letter on their own, reinforcing the skill.
This worksheet not only develops fine motor skills but also reinforces letter recognition. Children will become familiar with how each letter looks and feels to write.
Tracing and writing straight-line letters can also support children’s pencil control, hand-eye coordination, and concentration. All of these are key skills in early literacy development.
By focusing on these particular letters, the worksheet allows children to master one aspect of handwriting at a time, rather than overwhelming them with too many different types of letter shapes.
This targeted practice is ideal for supporting children who may be struggling with letter formation, or for introducing these letters in a way that feels manageable and fun.
Use this worksheet as part of a broader handwriting lesson or as a focused activity during literacy sessions.
