This simple synonyms worksheet asks students to find more creative synonyms for typical words found in the traditional tale, Little Red Riding Hood. Words that pupils need to generate synonyms for include: alone, big, brave, dark, go, went and scared.
Once they’ve generated their synonyms on the worksheet, students need to choose one of the following tasks:
- Write a description suggested by the picture
- Describe a time you were afraid of someone or something
Success criteria
- Use at least 5 of the synonyms from the worksheet
- Use at least 3 language techniques to build imagery
- Use at least 1 short sentence for effect
- Use 2 examples of ambitious punctuation
Extension activities
For differentiation or early finishers, consider adding these options:
- Create a thesaurus-inspired “Synonyms Tree” where students group their new words by shades of meaning.
- Write a short dialogue between two characters from Little Red Riding Hood using at least three of the synonyms.
- Challenge students to replace the original words in the tale with their synonyms and reflect on how the changes impact the story’s tone.
This activity not only enriches vocabulary but also builds confidence in experimenting with language to create vivid and engaging descriptions.
