This SEN toolkit from BookTrust contains a diverse selection of fabulous books and activities to support children’s love of reading. These activities are great for engaging children with special educational needs, but all children will enjoy them.
The different activities are organised around four different lesson themes, designed to encourage a love of reading among children with special educational needs.
Act out a scene
Example activity: Make masks for favourite book characters. Wearing the masks, ask children to act out a short scene from their character’s story, working in pairs or groups where possible.
Amazing animal alphabet
Example activity: Make your own alphabet of animals from around the world inspired by ABC books like Animal ABC by David Wojtowycz or African Animals ABC by Phillipa-Alys Browne.
Home sweet home
Example activity: What kind of house would children most like to live in? Ask them what it would look like and where in the world it would be. Let imaginations run wild: you could share a book about an unusual house, such as My House by Delphine Durand, or The Haunted House by Kazuno Kahara for ideas.
Wishes around the world
Ask children to act out an occasion when we might often make a wish, such as blowing out birthday candles. Can they think of other times when we make wishes? Talk about traditions such as throwing coins in a fountain or wishing on a star.
BookTrust is the UK’s largest children’s reading charity with a history that stretches back over 100 years.
