This lesson plan and comic-style story are designed to teach KS2 pupils about looking after their teeth.
Developed with teachers and dental experts, this PowerPoint presentation use a simple science experiment to introduce the idea of how sugary drinks can affect teeth.
Dental health is an important issue. Every ten minutes a child in England has a rotten tooth removed. On average, children miss three days of school as a result of dental issues.
Teeth KS2 learning objectives
After completing these lessons, students should be able to:
- Design an experiment to show how sugary drinks can affect teeth
- Describe ways to keep their teeth healthy
- Understand that eating or drinking too much sugar causes tooth decay
What you’ll need
- Egg shells
- Clear cups
- High sugar cola
- Milk or water
- High sugar sports drinks, squash or juice
- White labels for cups
Making the test fair
- What will you keep the same for each egg? Amount of liquid, length of time they stay in the liquid
- What will you change? Different liquid in each cup (one should be water)
- What will you measure? Amount/rate of discolouration
- How will you measure it? Compare to white egg / arrange in order of light to dark etc.
