Years 1-6

Subjects

This worksheet features writing prompts to help pupils create a persuasive poster promoting the benefits of recycling. It comes from the OUP primary literacy resource series Project X Origins.

The recycling poster resource guides pupils to plan a recycling poster by brainstorming powerful words, questions and specific actions they want to encourage.

Pupils then need to design their poster on a separate piece of paper, ensuring it is bright and visually appealing.

Recycling poster activity

To use this activity in a KS1 or KS2 classroom:

  1. Introduce the concept: Start with a class discussion about recycling, its importance, and examples of how waste can be repurposed. Share visuals or short videos to make it engaging.
  2. Set the task: Hand out the activity sheet and explain the goal of designing a recycling poster. Highlight the importance of persuasive language and clear communication.
  3. Brainstorm together: Work as a class or in small groups to brainstorm powerful words and impactful questions that could encourage others to recycle.
  4. Individual creativity: Allow pupils to work independently or in pairs to fill in the worksheet and sketch their poster ideas on a new sheet of paper.
  5. Design the poster: Provide art supplies for pupils to bring their ideas to life. Encourage the use of bright colours, drawings and bold text to make their posters eye-catching.
  6. Present and reflect: Have pupils share their posters with the class and explain their choices. Display the posters around the school to promote awareness.

This activity not only develops literacy and artistic skills but also fosters critical thinking and a sense of responsibility for the environment.
