I SAW A WABUB meaning

I SAW A WABUB is an acronym that can help your pupils to recall subordinating conjunctions. Every letter represents a specific conjunction. These are:

  • if
  • since
  • as
  • when
  • although
  • while
  • after
  • before
  • until
  • because

FANBOYS meaning

In a similar way, the acronym FANBOYS can help your students remember coordinating conjunctions. Each letter stands for a different coordinating conjunction:

  • For
  • And
  • Nor
  • But
  • Or
  • Yet
  • So

Worksheets

Print out these attractive superhero-themed worksheets for children to fill in. For activity 1 they need to fill in the blanks with the appropriate conjunction from FANBOYS or I SAW A WABUB. Keep in mind some conjunctions might fit multiple sentences!

Activity 2 involves writing two to three sentences or a short paragraph about whatever you like. Make sure to incorporate at least one conjunction from both the FANBOYS and I SAW A WABUB sets.

This download contains two bright and bold superhero-themed posters that you can print out and display in you classroom – one for I SAW A WABUB and one for FANBOYS. Each poster also features example sentences:

FANBOYS

For: I packed an umbrella for the rain.
And: She loves cats, and he prefers dogs.
Nor: He doesn’t like peas, nor will he eat carrots.
But: I wanted to stay, but I was too tired.
Or: Do you want tea, or would you like coffee?
Yet: She’s quite small, yet she struggled to fit.
So: I didn’t have flour, so I couldn’t bake a cake

I SAW A WABUB

If: If it rains, we’ll stay inside.
Since: She’s been tired since she woke up.
As: He went to bed early as he had an early start.
When: I always drink water when I wake up.
Although: Although it was cold, he went outside.
While: While I was reading, the power went out.
After: After she finished her work, she watched TV.
Before: Always eat before you go to the gym.
Until: She waited until the last minute to do it.
Because: I went to bed because I was tired.
