This print-ready reading strategies PDF details six classroom strategies, and assorted associated activities, that Lodge Park Academy in Corby uses to improve standards of cross-curricular literacy.
Reading strategies to try
The document covers the following ideas:
- Teacher reads (stop and jot) – Read aloud so students have the best chance of comprehending the text. Use ‘stop and jot’ to highlight key points of meaning during reading. Explain and tell – don’t ask for guesses. Students jot notes down in the margin as you speak. Check for understanding post-reading via cold call or ‘everybody writes’.
- Reading aloud (control the game) – Students take turns reading. Say a student’s name after a full stop to change the reader. Students need to be alert and following along to start reading as soon as they hear their name. ‘Control the game’ by choosing an unpredictable pattern. Make strategic decision about who reads which bit in order to challenge or support.
Other ideas you’ll learn include:
- Accountable independent read (focal points)
- Vocabulary (spotlighting)
- Culture of error (no opt out)
- Everybody writes (check for understanding)
