This algebra resource tasks students with playing a Connect 4 style game of connecting four squares to learn about how to substitute in simple and more complex algebraic expressions.
Pupils work in pairs. The aim is to get a connect four – this can be straight across, diagonal or straight up the sheet.
This algebra Connect 4 task creates really good discussion around each question. Both pupils complete each question – the person to choose the box wins it if they get it correct but if they don’t but their partner does, they win the box. The first to get Connect 4 wins.
Pupils can also complete this as a differentiated worksheet. Choose between red (foundation), amber (little bit harder), green (secure in the topic being taught) and blue (exceeding – pupils can work with skill taught in various contexts).
Ask pupils to show the questions, working out and answers that they have attempted in their class book.
