PDF quiz on common exception word spellings
KS1, KS2
Years 1-6
Spelling goes hand in hand with decoding, reading comprehension and vocabulary development. This Y2 common exception words activity from Y2 ESSENTIALspelling brings together each of these.
Use this quiz on its own, or combine it with activities suggested in our tricky words article from Michelle Nicholson.
Alternatively, make several copies of the grid to chop up and give out to children, who can work with a partner to pick up a card and ask each other the clue.
The partner should write down the word and the children should both check the spelling before moving on.
Modify this for some learners by providing the list of Y2 common exception words for them to check against. Get them to work in pairs or a small team to work out which word answers each clue. Then challenge the children to cover over the word before attempting to spell it.
