KS2
Years 3-6
Explore comedy and laughter in the classroom through comedy writing and performance, funny art challenges and humorous character creation…
In this lesson, children will take part in discussions about how comedy is an important tool for wellbeing and the pitfalls that can occur when trying to make others laugh.
They will also perform in a comedy show after collecting their funniest jokes, learning important performance techniques and teamwork skills.
They will learn how to look for the unexpected in images and scenarios to make an audience laugh and be encouraged to use art to create humorous characters that they can use to write comedy-style pieces of writing.
Comedy writing learning objectives
- Learn how laughter is a tool for wellbeing and connection
- Use images to inspire comedy writing
- Improve communication and public speaking skills when performing
- Find out about different comedy styles and think about what makes you laugh
Starter activity
People say laughter is the ‘best medicine.’ Discuss what the children think that means and if they can think of real-life examples where using humour has helped them.
Invite them to vote if they agree with the saying, and if not, why not?
Following the discussion, show two images that portray people laughing together and then with people laughing at a person.
Discuss their reactions and pull out the differences between laughing with or laughing at people. Decide on a class agreement about how we should use comedy in the classroom. Are there do’s and don’ts they could create?
