This bus stop division worksheet tasks Year 5 children with using the short division written bus stop method to solve eight division problems involving numbers up to 4 digits. There is ample space for pupils to illustrate their step-by-step working.

This Year 5 bus stop division worksheet helps learners to effectively practise and strengthen their grasp of this method.

They will enhance their division skills and boost their confidence in approaching and successfully solving division challenges.

The structured nature of the bus stop method encourages children to approach division problems systematically, fostering organisation and logical thinking skills.

This Year 5 short division (bus stop method) worksheet aligns with KS2 multiplication and division on the primary national curriculum.

What is bus stop division?

The bus stop division method is a written strategy for division. We can use it to divide larger numbers, such as four-digit numbers, by a single-digit number. This method is named after its layout, which resembles people waiting at a bus stop.

In Year 5, the national curriculum requires students to use formal written methods for division. The bus stop method helps them meet this requirement by breaking the calculation into manageable steps.

It is especially useful for dividing numbers that don’t divide evenly, as it allows students to work out remainders systematically.

This method also prepares students for more complex division, such as long division or division with decimals, which they will encounter in Year 6.

It reinforces important arithmetic skills, including multiplication, subtraction and place value, while building their confidence in handling larger numbers.
