The teaching aims of this budgeting lesson are to explain the concept of budgeting and money management. You’ll cover how to budget and what it entails. You’ll also identify different potential living costs and the importance of money management.
Pupils will think about the possible consequences if they don’t manage their money properly. They’ll look at the main areas of expenditure incurred by an average household. They’ll also get an insight into how bills and expenses function.

Starter activity
This exercise gives students an idea of how much things actually cost and the possible variations in price and quality.
Look at the included list of items. For each item you must provide a source of evidence to support your finding of how much it costs.
Discuss your findings as a class and consider:
- what you think is a reasonable price for an item
- what you think is a waste of money
- what difference does quality make to your spending
- anything that surprised you – either cheaper or more expensive than you expected
