86-slide PowerPoint, PDF and Word worksheets
KS3
Years 7-9
This eight-lesson area and perimeter KS3 sequence contains an extensive PowerPoint and related worksheets. It covers the following:
- Area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes
- Area of triangles, parallelograms and trapeziums
- Area and circumference of circles; fractions of circles
- Additive and subtractive methods for area (including moving parts of a shape to ‘fill in gaps’)
- Levelled activity: additive and subtractive methods
- Fraction of area shaded (includes principles of (a) splitting into congruent shapes; (b) the area of two triangles with the same base are proportional to the height, and equal if height is same)
- Consolidation/mini-assessment
With this resource, students will:
- Find the perimeter and area of rectilinear shapes.
- Find the area of a triangle, trapezium and parallelogram
- Find the area and circumference/perimeter of circles and fractions of circles (eg 1/2, 1/4)
- Appreciate strategies to find areas of composite shapes, by (i) adding areas (ii) subtracting areas, including appreciation of the ‘frame’ method and (iii) cutting/reforming areas
- Appreciate that triangles have the same area if their base and height are the same, and compare sizes of triangles by considering the proportion of base/height
- Find what fraction of a shape is shaded by splitting into congruent shapes
KS3 area and perimeter curriculum
- Geometry and measures: Derive and apply formulae to calculate and solve problems involving: perimeter and area of triangles, parallelograms, trapezia, volume of cuboids (including cubes) and other prisms (including cylinders)
