What will students see and do?
Bring the magic of the Roald Dahl Museum’s Sandford Award-winning schools programme to your class.
Whether you opt to visit the Museum in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire or visit virtually from your classroom, your students will gain skills and confidence in literacy whilst learning about the creative processes of the world’s number one storyteller.
The Roald Dahl Museum is the home of Roald Dahl’s archive and the author’s Writing Hut – the place where he wrote all of his stories for children. The Museum is the perfect place to see the writing process in action by one of its masters.
Pick from a range of exciting sessions around themes such as crafting characters, editing/redrafting and unlocking ideas and inspiration.
The Museum offers two types of onsite session: galleries-based 90-minute sessions and archive-based 180-minute sessions, which include time exploring the Museum’s interactive galleries as well as small group activities working with materials from the Roald Dahl archive.
You can also opt to visit the Museum virtually and take part in a Livestream Creating Characters session, where you will connect directly with your session leader at the Museum.
Enjoy a mix of pre-recorded films in and around the galleries, live presentation and pre-delivered activities.
How does the trip link to the curriculum?
All of the Museum’s sessions are focused on Roald Dahl’s creative processes.
Your pupils will use Roald’s work as a model to develop understanding of different aspects of storymaking before they try out these processes for themselves. Sessions particularly target developing positive attitudes towards writing.
Some sessions focus on the editing process, and these help pupils to make simple changes, assess the effectiveness of choices, and suggest improvements as well as selecting grammar and vocabulary to achieve certain effects.
Other sessions focus on character development and ideas generation. These support your pupils to write fictional narratives as well as identifying themes and purpose of written texts.
Across all sessions, children will be drafting and evaluating text.
Sessions are organised with an emphasis on active and creative group work which supports links with other areas of the curriculum.
There is plenty of discussion, which allows children to use spoken language to explore their ideas as well as participating in collaborative conversations in order to learn. In creative sessions, pupils produce creative work by experimenting with different materials.
