What will students see and do?

There are numerous activities and watersports adventures available to students at Great Potheridge House, including:

– Abseiling

– Teambuilding tasks

– Climbing wall

– Blind line

– Low ropes

– Orienteering

– Egg drop

– Night walk

– Crate stack

– Archery

– Coasteering

– Moorland day

– Gorge scrambling

– Beach walk

– Adventure walk

– Lake day

– River Torridge canoe trip

Some activities, such as the egg drop, will take place on-site at Great Potheridge House, while students will be taken off-site for many of them, for example the beach walk or lake day.

How does the trip link to the curriculum?

The physical nature of the activities provides a great opportunity to tie in to PE and physical development. And many of the activities require teambuilding, problem-solving and communication skills as students work together.

Activities such as the adventure walk or the beach day are the perfect for diving into geography and science with students, looking at the local flora and fauna, and going over the landforms and different ecosystems.

Plus, Great Potheridge House is a historic building if you want to teach students about life during the 17th Century.

There are no explicit teaching resources, as all activities are led by the staff at Encompass Training, allowing you to relax and take more of a supporting role in the outdoor education program.

There are several helpful downloadable resources, including:

– Floor plan: for navigating Great Potheridge House

– Roaming list: to make it easier to organise students’ roommates

– Activities list: to provide more detail on each of the activities offered

– Information and kit list: packing lists and additional information for teachers

Opening times

The office at the centre is open from 9am to 5pm during on weekdays, but staff are on-site to support teachers 24/7 while on one of these adventures.

Most activities take place during the standard work hours, making it easy for teachers and students to organise their days. After 5pm, most activities have wrapped up and students are taken back to Great Potheridge House.
