What will students see and do?
Take a trip to the great outdoors at Conkers Discovery Centre in Moira near Swadlincote for activity days spent surrounded by nature.
This Derbyshire venue is an hour’s drive south of the Peak District National Park and is set in 120 acres of glorious woodland, with a pond and lakes to take adventure activities to the water.
There is plenty to choose from for a school trip, whether students want active fun, challenging pursuits or to get up-close with the natural environment.
For outdoor adventure activities, choose from things like mountain biking, kata canoeing and pedal go-karting through the woods, while those with an eye for a target will enjoy a spot of archery.
Team building is on the agenda, too, and you can choose two fun team building activities from the sessions menu for your group. These include an assault course, problem solving tasks and a construction derby.
Adrenaline junkies are catered to as well at Conkers Discovery – the high ropes course isn’t for the faint-hearted, as students take to the air to navigate a course towering 10m above the ground.
There’s a climbing wall for those who can’t get enough of the high life, plus a low ropes course for anyone wanting a challenge closer to the ground.
How does the trip link to the curriculum?
There is a range of both teacher- and ranger-led interactive activities for small groups at various key stage levels.
Sessions are suitable for primary school trips and upwards.
Students at KS2 and KS3 can learn about the natural environment through a huge range of learning outside the classroom activities, including ‘Woodland Web’ which explores how a food chain works, a pond dipping session in ‘Underwater Wonderland’, plus bushcraft and finding out how to build a good shelter in a survival situation.
EYFS and KS1 pupils can take part in fun learning activities as they discover all about prey in a ‘Mud Monster’ session, find out fun facts about trees when they take part in the ‘Teddy Bear’s Grand Adventure’ or follow a trail around the woods during a ‘Where do I Go?’ orienteering challenge.
KS2 students can also take part in a themed day based around Vikings, Romans, Stone Age or Victorian eras. This involves a fully immersive experience learning about what it was like to live during these times.
