What will students see and do?
If you’re looking for a top London day out, head to Benjamin Franklin House at 36 Craven Street, Charing Cross. This museum is based on the life and work of founding father Benjamin Franklin.
Children can take part in an interactive walkthrough of historic rooms, accompanied by Franklin’s landlady Polly. They can also enjoy fun hands-on activities. Visit the medical history room to learn about Polly’s anatomist husband, Dr William Hewson, and find out why bones were found in the basement.
Pupils can also observe live science demonstrations. Education days take place every Tuesday in the Student Science Centre.
How does the trip link to the curriculum?
As an inventor, Benjamin Franklin was actively involved in the study of electricity. He investigated different materials’ properties and assessed their suitability for the task at hand. In the demonstration room pupils can reproduce one of Franklin’s scientific investigations.
The historic anatomy school at the house provides pupils with the chance to learn about the human body and the history of medicine.
By exploring the Georgian building, children are encouraged to develop their historical language and compare family life with their own experiences.
