What will students see and do?
Also known as Dartmoor Active Leisure, Adventure Okehampton has been providing trips to inspire, motivate and challenge participants since 1997.
The centre employs a team of expert instructors and offers a range of packages that bring real outdoor adventures to your school trip, making the most of the great outdoors and local area.
One package enables students to enjoy a mixture of adventure activities, including the following:
archery
Big Oke abseiling
bushcraft
Canadian canoeing
climbing
cycling
Dartmoor expeditions
gorge scrambling
guided walks
high ropes
kayaking
low ropes
mountain biking
mountain boarding
orienteering
pony trekking
raft building
team building games
Tyrolean Traverse
These adventure activities are perfect for PE students or pupils wishing to push themselves through enrichment and transition programmes.
Groups are guided through the basic skills required for a session, enabling each participant to experience an adrenaline rush as they push their personal boundaries and grow in confidence.
Another package takes advantage of Adventure Okehampton’s location at the edge of Dartmoor National Park, an ideal venue for many different types of Geography fieldwork.
There are several areas for studying Tor formations, from classic sites such as Hay Tor to more local sites around Okehampton.
Dartmoor also has the highest density of prehistoric monuments in Europe, some of which are just a walk away. If you’re keen to explore further, there is Braunton Burrow, a classic dune system; Medieval field systems that provide a view of past landscape changes in the region; Dartmoor’s river system; the Exe and Teign Estuaries; the Meldon Quarry; and the Aplite quarry and limestone kilns.
Finally, the discovery package adds a fun and challenging historical perspective to an activity stay. Take a trip to Okehampton Castle, the Museum of Dartmoor Life or the Medieval deserted villages, with activities that explore shelter building, archery and fire lighting. Combined with a range of self-led activities, developed by the National Park, that span history, geography and literacy and PSHE, you can develop a programme meeting all your cross-curricular needs.
How does the trip link to the curriculum?
Adventure Okehampton’s main ethos is to provide people with the chance to experience Dartmoor via challenging residentials, as “where you stay changes who you become”.
The programmes offer cross-curricular activities and encourage teamwork through physical activities that develop social skills, and may even help those who are shy and struggle to interact with others.
Moreover, Adventure Okehampton’s school trip packages can be tailored to fulfil your specific needs and meet the skill levels of everyone taking part.
Activities are planned by the Activities Manager in consultation with the group leader. All of the programmes can be customised to add visits to educational experiences and historical sites, as well as other activities delivered by chosen partners.
