30 Second Briefing

Oxford Smart Mosaic is an intuitive and impactful Key Stage 3 maths course created by Oxford and Craig Barton that embeds mastery.

Based on classroom best practice, Mosaic combines clear, high-quality instruction with engaging, thought-provoking tasks and is designed to support all students to achieve their potential and enjoy mathematics.

1. An inclusive mastery approach

Intuitive to implement, Mosaic supports specialists and non-specialists alike. It fully supports the five core mastery principles set out by the NCETM and is packed with different types of practice to build knowledge and help students master each topic as they progress through the curriculum.

2. Designed around Craig Barton’s Learning Episode Model

Mosaic provides a responsive, step-by-step approach that is easy to implement with minimal PD. Knowledge is introduced in micro-steps so that it builds progressively, whilst concepts are connected and understanding is deepened through intelligent practice opportunities and Craig Barton’s ‘Reflect, Expect, Check, Explain’ model.

Benjamin Mapp, Assistant Principal at Harris Academy Chafford Hundred, tells us about his school’s implementation of Oxford Smart Mosaic and the positive impact it’s had on both students and staff.

3. Aligned to the DfE non-statutory guidance

Mosaic provides a clear and coherent curriculum pathway, with careful sequencing and linking of knowledge, skills, and understanding throughout Key Stage 3 – easing the transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 and setting students up for success at GCSE.

4. Adaptive learning pathways support all students to thrive at their own level

‘Next Steps’ and misconceptions data on Kerboodle offer opportunities to provide timely and effective personalised intervention and extension activities to strengthen and extend students’ knowledge.

Using data from our partners at Eedi, Diagnostic Questions at the start of every chapter allow teachers to easily check understanding.

“Knowledge is introduced in micro-steps so that it builds progressively.”

5. Everything all in one place!

Mosaic is delivered through a blend of print and digital resources, with all digital resources – including digital books, lesson PowerPoints, activity sheets, assessments, Next Steps, misconceptions data and reporting – available on Kerboodle.
