Turn climate fear into climate fun with MASC to the eco-beat

Two front covers of books in the MASC to the eco-beat series

The MASC to the eco-beat series by Dr Rona D. Linklater is a unique fusion of fiction and non-fiction that encourages pupils in Key Stage 2 to take action to protect our ecosystem.

Using a combination of novel music, art, stories and differentiated creative tasks, each book teaches children about environmental issues while developing collaborative music, writing, and communication skills.

Why choose MASC to the eco-beat?

The series features two imaginative, informative books that engage children in environmental issues through singing and performing together:

  • Ava Goes Green – Aimed at lower KS2, book 1 highlights the effects of plastic pollution with a cast of relatable creatures that includes Kitti Kitiwake and Toyesh, the little turtle.
  • Ava Gets Active – Suitable for KS2, book 2 explores the role of chemical and gas pollution in climate change and its effects on the habitats of creatures such as Max, the tabby cat; Ran-Tan, the orangutan; and Pol, the polar bear.

Both titles benefit from stunning illustrations by Stu McLellan, which create a magical world to stimulate children’s imagination and support their learning.

Inside each book, QR codes provide access to free WAV files to accompany the songs as well as free instrumental parts for classroom percussion. The series is ideal for music and non-music specialists alike, peripatetic sessions, out-of-hours clubs, and those who are homeschooling.

Downloadable teacher guides for both titles are also available, linked to the primary grading system assessment statements.

Raise awareness

The attitudes and actions of our children towards the world they are inheriting are crucial if we are to make a difference and maintain our ecosystem. Research has shown that MASC to the eco-beat can help you raise awareness of climate change and promote the creative thinking needed to find solutions.

The first two books in the series will be joined by book 3, Ava Goes Global, offering even more ways to explore the topic of climate change.
