Are KS1 SATs compulsory?

No, they’re not. Following a 2017 consultation, the government announced in 2022 that from the academic year 2023-2024 onwards, end-of-KS1 assessments are no longer statutory and are now optional.

The following KS1 assessments are now optional:

  • teacher assessment judgements in reading, writing, maths and science
  • tests in reading and maths (the grammar, punctuation and spelling test will also remain optional)
  • where relevant, using the pre-key stage standards or engagement model

When are KS1 SATs 2025?

The government recommends that schools administer optional KS1 SATs during May 2025.
