Hundreds of excellent books were submitted, with just 18 selected for the final shortlist. From here, the judging panel – which included Mumsnet editor Kate Williams and Readathon founder Brough Girling – had the unenviable task of picking just three winners, one each for Early Years, KS1 and KS2.

The winning books will be of particular interest to teachers as the judging criteria takes into account such things as opportunities for deeper discussion and text that encourages language play and development. Ultimately, though, we asked each judge to pick the books they loved the most.

We highly recommend all the titles that made the final cut, but for 2017 the books that triumphed were:

Reception They All Saw A Cat, by Brendan Wenzel (Chronicle Kids)

Key Stage 1 Ada Twist, Scientist, by Andrea Beaty (Abrams)

Key Stage 2 Wolf Hollow, by Lauren Wolk (Penguin)
