Objectives: Students learn about how sound reflects off various surfaces and the uses this can be put to.
Lesson 1 Students revise the properties of sound waves and think about why satellite dishes and other objects that rely on collecting waves are shaped in a certain way.
Lesson 2 Students plan a practical, using their knowledge of reflecting waves to determine the best arrangement of mirrors to make reflected light rays converge. They then apply this to determining the best shape of a sound reflector.
Lesson 3 Students use distance-speed-time calculations to work out the effectiveness of aircraft detectors that rely on sound reflection and then compare these to radar.
