You’ll analyse all the major characters introduced in chapter 1 and look for clues about context and deeper symbolic meaning.

Students will evaluate how Orwell introduces each character, including Mr Jones, Boxer, Clover, Old Major and more.

This is a very useful resource if you’re studying Animal Farm for AQA GCSE English Literature Paper 2.

  • How does Orwell present Mr Jones as an irresponsible farmer at the beginning of the text?
  • How is each character presented to us as readers and how does Orwell give us clues about what will happen later in the novel?
  • Is it important that the pigs position themselves right next to Old Major and in front of all the animals?
  • What does Old Major tell the animals and why?
  • How does Old Major show that the animals’ lives are terrible? How does he show an alternative reality to the one they have now?
  • How is Old Major able to convince the other animals his vision is correct?
