Julie from CLA answers your questions about CLA Copyright Essentials training and its benefits…
CLA Copyright Essentials is a CPD certified online training designed to help educators navigate copyright.
Educators and school staff can use the interactive modules to improve their understanding of how CLA fits into the copyright landscape. You can learn more about different licences and exceptions, foster a culture of ethical copying, and build confidence when reusing other people’s creations.
After completing the 30-minute training, you will receive a certificate of completion and be ready to tackle reusing material in the upcoming school year.
Why make CLA Copyright Essentials?
As an ex-teacher, I know how time-poor educators are, but I also know that they want to do the right thing – by creators, and by their learners.
Every year we run a survey with educators and school staff. Quick, practical and bitesize training has always ranked highly when we asked how we could better support educators in understanding copyright.
So, we set about making just that – and it’s CPD accredited!
What will I learn?
You’ll learn why copyright is important, how to get permission, and what to bear in mind day-to-day. The training shows where CLA fits in the wider copyright world – it also covers fair dealing and other licences and exceptions.
Each mini-module offers an interactive element; it might be a short quiz, a matching exercise, or a clickable classroom full of examples.
Why use the training?
You will be introduced to and guided through scenarios you might encounter at your school. I think we’ve all had a moment we wondered, ‘Is this legit?’!
The guide points you in the right direction and highlights the questions you might want to ask. It also helps you understand the wider implications of your copying and reuse.

Copyright Essentials was designed and created by Julie Murray. She is part of the team that makes licensing easier to understand with support materials, training and guidance.

Is it specifically for educators?
CLA Copyright Essentials was created with educators and school staff in mind from the very beginning. We’ve focused on real scenarios you might encounter at your school.
In one module, you can learn more about handouts or posters by clicking sections of a virtual classroom. Another answers questions about students copying. A third explains how to use films for extracurricular activities.
We know you’re busy, so we also made it quick – earn your certificate of completion in only 30 minutes.
How does it cultivate ethical content use?
As you become more familiar with copyright, you will learn to make informed decisions about reusing works, helping to foster a culture of ethical reuse in your school.
Copyright is everywhere, and responsible copying not only supports the content creators, but also supports your learners who will themselves create, use and share materials.
