What will students see and do?

Set in the heart of the Leicestershire countryside, the historic Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre is a multi-award-winning interactive exhibition and an invaluable resource of national heritage.

Although the exact location of the Battle of Bosworth was never written down, Leicestershire County Council chose Ambion Hill Farm to be the location for the country’s first battlefield interpretation centre to commemorate and tell the story of the bloody events of 22nd August 1485.

Visiting pupils of all ages can enjoy a wide range of education programmes, and learn about the Battle of Bosworth and its place in the Wars of the Roses, discover the dramatic medieval story of how King Richard III lost his life, crown and throne to Henry Tudor, and get up-close-and-personal with colourful and interactive hands-on displays.

There is a wide range of outdoor learning activities, living history events and a packed events programme. All ages can enjoy tours of the exhibition centre and guided walks of the battlefield trail with one of Bosworth’s knowledgeable tour guides, who will bring the events of the battle to life through lively interpretation and objects.

In addition, pupils can learn how medieval archers trained and handled a bow, how specially trained medieval surgeons worked, and how a medieval soldier lived and fought, including an in-depth look at a variety of medieval weapons, the make-up of an army, transportation, battle communications, and more.

That’s not all though, as many events and workshops look at other aspects of history, including a look at life in Roman Britain, recreated in a programme of activity that brings history to life. Pupils meet a Roman soldier, Marcus Vitius Valens, and Boudicca, who take the pupils on a journey of discovery as they learn about the life of a Roman soldier in the army, trade, politics, Roman religion, slavery and entertainment, and take part in some gruesome battle exercises.

How does the trip link to the curriculum?

Students will learn about events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally, as well as the lives of significant individuals.

In addition, pupils are encouraged to listen and respond appropriately to adults and their peers, ask relevant questions and justify answers, arguments and opinions, helping to develop good communication skills and critical thinking skills.

Likewise, during detective events, students will grow their deductive skills and verbal reasoning as they see what they can learn from the recent archaeological study of Bosworth Battlefield.
