The mission of Oddizzi is to put ‘geography back on the map’ in schools and bring the world to life and it does this with flair. One of the many fantastic resources it has on offer is devoted to the fragile continent of rock and snow, Antarctica.
There’s a good reason why Oddizzi has produced these resources – it wants schools to become Champions of Antarctica and a 2041 School.
Why 2041?
This refers to the 2041 Foundation – an organisation that was set up by explorer Robert Swan to engage and inspire young people to protect and preserve this last great wilderness on Earth so that it remains a natural reserve devoted to peace and science. 2041 is the year which the Antarctic Treaty can be renegotiated.
To become a 2041 school, all you need to do is download the 2041 School resource pack, giving you instant access to superb teaching and learning resources.
Both the KS1 and KS2 learning packs takes children to the Antarctic so they can learn more about its history and tales of adventure, ambition, scientific discovery and hope. They connect pupils to the continent in special ways so that they can discover and understand its value and why this precious wilderness needs safeguarding.
Included in the learning pack are eight short films, including fascinating interviews with Robert Swan – the first person in history to walk to both the North and South Poles. His insights and reflections are sure to inspire children as the next generation of leaders to take responsibility for Antarctica’s future.
Also included are colourful resource packs with brilliant lesson plans and teachers notes with answers. These are packed with fact files, knowledge checks, follow-me cards, reading materials, map activities, scavenger hunt, worksheets and extra missions.
You will also find resources devoted to great explorers and adventurers and women who lead the way, such as Barbara Hilary – the first African American woman on record to reach both the North and South Pole.
These tools help students make the connection between their lives and their role as global citizens and encourages them to be young leaders and ambassadors of renewable energy by planting hope and taking action.
Environmental awareness and sustainability are core ingredients of Gen Z’s DNA and these resources are tailor-made to encourage the decision-makers of the future to be the flag bearers of change for climate action.
Becoming a 2041 School is a real identity – you’ll belong to a community of learners and Antarctic activists with access to new challenges, resources, messages from the team and updates.
There are very few places in the world where there has never been war, where the environment is fully protected, and where scientific research has priority, but Antarctica is one of them. These resources will upgrade children’s knowledge and understanding so they can work together to act as enlightened, empowered, and engaged global citizens and create a sustainable world.
Antarctica might be 10,000 miles away from the UK but these resources will take children there so they get to know why it is vulnerable, why it has an uncertain future and why this truly remarkable place needs protecting.
For aspiring environmentalists, it doesn’t get any more urgent than this. Get 2041 on the radar now and download these great resources.
Oddizzi is an online subscription-based geography resource but the 2041 School resource pack is free to download.
