Years 1-11
Use this assessment for learning PDF from Naomi Barker’s book, The Teacher Journal, to think about how you can implement the principles of assessment for learning (also known as ‘responsive teaching’) in your classroom.
Assessment for learning PDF
Past planning
How have you made use of assessment for learning so far? Which strategies have you found to be more or less effective and why? Can you give a supporting example from your practice to illustrate your understanding?
Preparation
Observe a member of staff who has strong practice in this area. Using the guidance provided in the PDF, design a quiz for use with a class as either an exit ticket or activity within a lesson.
Explain how you planned the questions to ensure that the answers were plausible and would provide an insight into students’ learning, including potential misconceptions.
Explain how your planning was informed by your observation.
Follow-up
Evaluate what you learnt from your use of the quiz. Was it effectively diagnostic? How did the answers help shape your planning and teaching so that you were responsive to your findings?
What might you need to tweak for a future quiz? How will you now use this reflection to inform future practice?
