Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is the leading systematic, synthetic early reading programme validated by the DfE.
The programme provides a consistent and highly effective approach to teaching phonics to ensure all children become successful readers.
Developed by two schools with exceptional practice in Letters and Sounds – Little Sutton Primary and Wandle Learning Trust – the programme draws on the latest research into how children learn best, to meet Ofsted’s expectations to enable every pupil to become a reader.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised annual membership includes teaching content for every lesson in Reception and Year 1; assessment; keep-up support; and extensive online on-demand CPD with videos modelling every aspect of teaching, so all staff know how to support children learning to read.
“We have such fantastic results in Reception since our Little Wandle launch in September 2021. Our results improved by 40% in the first half term alone!”

Guidance is also provided for parents to encourage reading practice. Member schools are supported throughout the year with bespoke webinars, making the subscription excellent value for money.
Big Cat has partnered with Little Wandle to produce a wealth of classroom resources to support the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised SSP including flashcards, wall friezes, grapheme charts and desktop mats featuring mnemonics and catchphrases to appeal to children.
There are also 254 fully decodable Big Cat fiction and non-fiction books perfectly matched to the Little Wandle Phases, so that every child can learn to love reading.
From September 2022, Rapid Catch-up is available to support children aged 7+ who need support to master phonic knowledge.
50 decodable books with age-appropriate but accessible text and more mature illustrations and themes are available, alongside specific resources that match the Rapid Catch-up planning.
There is also guidance and support for special schools working with children with SEND who need the graduated approach, including sensory grapheme cards and a comprehensive teacher’s guide.
- The SSP programme, classroom resources and books were validated by the DfE in July 2021 and over 4000 schools have become members with numbers continuing to rise.
- The books include characters from a range of diverse backgrounds and feature stories about people with different abilities and that challenge gender stereotypes. We work with charity partners and experts to ensure that our stories and illustrations give a truthful representation so that our readers feel accepted and can see themselves in our books.
