Enhance a study of ancient Maya or Mexico with this Mexican food KS2 lesson plan which explores the area’s traditional cuisine…
A study of the Mayans and Mexico promises to be colourful and rich. Don’t overlook the delicious cuisine of Mexico.
In this lesson, by combining the food of Mexico with the skills of website building and the key features of persuasive writing, pupils have the chance to become restaurateurs. They’ll imagine, launch and run their very own school restaurant.
This project sits perfectly at the end of a study of the ancient Maya or Mexico. However, its principles could apply to the cuisine of many studies.

Starter activity
Begin by checking out the competition. With plenty of Mexican food on the high street, discover what the mainstream restaurants are doing and how yours can stand out.
Evaluate websites, check out branding and discuss how menus describe and entice. Maybe even get down to your local Mexican restaurant.
Sample and savour some traditional dishes (and test how easy they are to make with 30 pupils!) and don’t forget to jot down some sensory adjectives to describe them.
Come up with a name for the restaurant you’ll open. Explore puns, alliteration and near rhymes; our ‘Desburritos’ was inspired by Despacito for instance.
