We always start a journey by identifying the destination first and then planning the best route. Why should planning for learning be any different? It shouldn’t. This lesson plan template helps with backward planning of lessons.
Start from the right-hand column – going backwards. Omit the left-hand column if you are using to plan a sequence of lessons or a unit of work.

Column 6 (right-hand column)
Use this space to write down your overall aim. What is your destination?
Column 5
What does success look like for students? What is your success criteria?
Column 4
What does success look like for you, the teacher? This is where you can jot down AfL/measuring notes.
Column 3
What could prevent students’ success? Make a note of any misconceptions, or jot down the starting points for your pupils.
Column 2
What will deliver success? Write down the learning that will take place.
Column 1 (left-hand column)
This helps you think about what you will do to ensure success. It sets out a sequence for your lesson, which is as follows:
- Hook in/settle
- Celebrate prior learning
- State success criteria
- Explore topic
- Teach topic
- Master topic
- Reflect on success
