Peace at Last activities

Reading comprehension

After reading Peace at Last aloud, use the word mat to help your class identify and discuss key vocabulary like “aeroplane”, “tap” and “alarm clock”.

Ask your pupils to find these words on the mat and explain what they mean in the context of the story. This is a great way to reinforce comprehension and expand their vocabulary.

Writing activity

Encourage creative writing by using the word mat as a reference tool. Your pupils could write their own version of Peace at Last, incorporating the vocabulary from the mat, or they could write about sounds that might keep them awake at night.

This gives them a solid starting point for their writing and helps develop their storytelling skills.

Phonics practice

Highlight the phonics patterns in the vocabulary on the word mat. Challenge your class to come up with other words that share similar sounds.

Drama and role play

Use the word mat to inspire some role play. Your pupils can act out scenes from the book, using the vocabulary to describe what their character is doing or hearing.

This not only reinforces the words but also gives them a chance to learn through movement and play.
