Flat batteries. Bulbless torches. Scratched mirrors. For too many years the spectre of faulty resources has kept me awake at night ahead of our science topic on ‘light’.
I would remain haunted throughout the term, manically trying to reattach peel-off covers to plastic mirrors and standing guard over the diminishing tray of torches.
My light bulb of science inspiration had been well and truly extinguished.
However, this time round I was determined to break the cycle. I set aside a quiet afternoon during the summer holidays, whilst the sun was shining and all was peaceful, to do battle with my torchlight tormentors.
The outcome was a truly motivational sequence of lessons that definitely illuminated my whole class, and helped me to rediscover my love of light in the science curriculum.
