Ahoy, teachers! Dive into the world of swashbuckling adventures with this free pirate fact file worksheet. It’s a great way to spark creativity and practise essential writing skills in your classroom.

This worksheet invites pupils to either summarise a character from a pirate-themed story they love or invent their very own legendary pirate, complete with backstory and adventures.

The worksheet features several structured fields, including:

  • Pirate name: Let imaginations run wild as pupils dream up fierce, funny or mysterious names like Captain Stormbeard or Peg-Leg Polly
  • Picture: Encourage pupils to illustrate their pirate, developing artistic skills and bringing their creation to life
  • Real name: Add depth by revealing a hidden identity. Perhaps their pirate is secretly a noble who turned to piracy?
  • Name of pirate ships: Get them thinking about the kinds of ships their pirate would sail – will it be The Crimson Kraken or The Jolly Juggernaut?
  • What did they do?: This section opens up endless storytelling possibilities. Did their pirate steal treasure, save their crew from danger or search for lost islands?

Pirate fact file

This worksheet is perfect for literacy lessons. Use it as part of a narrative writing unit, helping pupils explore character development and plot.

It’s equally fantastic for topic work in history or geography, allowing pupils to link their creations to real-life pirates or maritime exploration.

The activity can also serve as a fun tie-in with Talk Like a Pirate Day, pirate-themed role-play or a school project on the golden age of piracy.

This worksheet also works well as a homework task, inspiring independent research or creative writing.

This resource is taken from the OUP primary literacy resource series Project X Origins.
