Dr Seuss’ classic book Green Eggs and Ham, featuring the famous Sam-I-Am, was first published all the way back in 1960.

By reading Green Eggs and Ham, talking about the book and taking part in these activities, children will…
- Enjoy a shared reading experience and build on it
- Express their opinions about the text and the way it’s written, and listen/respond to the opinions of others
- Use text and pictures to gain insight into the Grouch’s feelings and discover how they change
- Explore the idea of persuasion through drama, drawing and creative writing
- Write their own story with a very limited word count
- Be inspired to try something new – and have their achievement recognised
Activity 1: Powers of persuasion
This looks at how Sam-I-Am persuades the Grouch to try new things in the book. Students will think about how they feel when someone tries to persuade them to do something.
They will also consider when you should say ‘no’ to someone who wants you to do something.
Finally, they will use the printable worksheet to create a poster or advert persuading people to do something. This could be picking up litter or trying new foods.
Activity 2: Trying something new
Here, pupils will use freeze frames to re-create the four panels where the Grouch tries green eggs and ham. They’ll explore the body language and emotions of the characters.
They will also think about something new they could try, be it food, an activity or another kind of challenge. They’ll write about what they’re going to do, and why. Then they can write a one-sentence resolution on the activity sheet to remind themselves of their promise.
Plus, there’s a downloadable certificate you can present to children when they accomplish their challenge!
Activity 3: Writing like Dr Seuss
Students will become writing and story detectives – revisiting the story looking for rhyme, repetition, jokes, great words and other ways Dr Seuss makes the story come alive.
Then, using the downloadable activity sheet, they can write a simple story using a very limited range of words, like Dr Seuss.
